With a name like Hercules Double IPA You would expect a beer that is as strong as it is bold. But, if Kevin Sorbo has taught me anything, it’s that Hercules not only posses chutzpah sand strength but the smoothness of a mythological James Dean. I take a sip. This beer was appropriately named. Strong but seemingly sweet, the hops have more of a grassy note than a bitter one. Just like the beloved son of Zeus, this beer comes off seemingly harmless and smooth. But don’t be too quick to assume this beer as a session style IPA. This is not the kind of beer that you would expect to pack a punch that could send you to the lower end of olympus, but it does. At one point I grabbed the bottle to make sure I was reading the label right, a double IPA? But yes, this smooth tasting demigod of a beer is tilting the scales at around ten percent ABV, nothing to shake a stick, or a three headed dog at. I was as pleased with this beer. It made me feel like I could fight off the armies of Achilles with a bar stool…… I give it an 8.5.

We started a beer blog to express our appreciation of craft beer. Appreciation… not abuse. However, I find myself sitting here, on a couch, being subjected to Sex and the City playing in the background. Now notice, I did not say watching, but this show is being played loud enough in the background that it is commanding some level of my attention. So my journey to express my affection for craft beer is quickly being pushed to the on shoulder of abuse. Aiding every derailed train of thought I have is a sip of a craft beer high in ABV. For these kinds of situations I generally bring out the big guns. The heavy hitters if you will. The beers that masquerade as the session style beers that have smooth drinkable qualities, but really hold an ABV north of 8 percent. Some of my trusted friends I call upon in these situations? Hercules Double IPA, by the Great divide. Ten percent. Thank you. Idiot IPA by Coronado Brewing company. At 8.5 percent, it has the potential to make Miranda look attractive. And my ace in the hole? My friend who I can always turn to? The one who always understands? Speedway Stout by Ale Smith. thank you Speedway for your generous contribution of 12 percent ABV. You always know how to pick me up in speedily like fashion and take me away to the land of dulled senses, including, but not limited to hearing and vision. That always helps when being subjected to poor television. I never intended to abuse alcohol when doing these reviews, but you cant appreciate the beer if you don’t appreciate all of its qualities. And perhaps I owe a thank you to Sex and the City for leading me to appreciate, arguably the most notable of the beer qualities, alcohol.

When I asked the bartender at Karl Strauss what specialty beers they might have on tap , I was not expecting to be told they had a cask double IPA. How could I order anything else? The carbonation and temperature of the beer was what I had expected, low and warm, however the flavor was not. I have had some of the specialty beers from Karl Strauss before and they have blown me away. Their Boardwalk Black Rye as well as their Tower 10 IPA are exceptional beers with a presence that demands respect from every taste bud in your mouth, however this cask style double IPA did not march to the beat of that drum. This double IPA came off slightly acidic and grassy as far as the hops were concerned, and if you couple that with the lack of carbonation, there was just not a strong presence to this beer. That is not necessarily a bad thing though. If you can make a beer that weighs in around 9% ABV and drinks like a session beer, then by all means, I’ll take two. Besides, I didn’t need outrageous hop flavoring to enjoy this beer, the fact that Pat was still at work and I could send him pictures of me indulging in my new found cask treasure while he slaved away at the hand of his employers was all I needed to bring this beer up in the rating system for me. I’ll give it a 6.75.

Commercial Description:

When we kicked-off this series of intense hoppy beers, we wanted to go big. Imported New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops provide a vibrant tropical aroma that raises eyebrows and expectations. Aggressive amounts of Warrior and Ahtanum hops produce an assertive bitterness that stands out against a firm malt backbone. Balanced even at 90 IBUs, Big Barrel leaves a considerable first impression that serves as a prelude of things to come.

Scott brought this beer back from his recent trip to South Carolina. He was super pumped on the fact that it was aged in red wine barrels, so we stuck it in the holding fridge and sat on it. We would look at this beer every week and ask our selves, should we do it….no not this week. Finally after about two months we have decided to pull it out of the fridge and give it a whirl. If we had any idea how amazing this beer was we would have spent that last two months trying to get a couple more bottles. Its not every day you come across a beer that makes you freak out a little.

COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Red label. This tripel has been aged for 9 months in oak barrels that were previously used to mature red wine. During the maturation period in our climate controlled barrel room, the beer picks up new flavors from the barrels and their previous contents. The origin of the barrel and the grape varietal it contained both contribute their own nuances.

Look for it beginning next week on shelves or behind the bar wherever our beer is sold. Deep ruby red in color, assertively hopped and brewed with dark caramel malt, this beer is definitely “for the drinking town with a skiing problem.”

I hope you get a chance to enjoy some on a cold night soon, as it doesn’t get any better than this. Really. It doesn’t. Never Summer Ale won the gold medal for strong ales in the 2004 World Beer Cup. Kudos to our boys in the brewhouse.

COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Fischer Tradition is a smooth, complex beer which is fruity and has some flowery undertones. Savour it as an aperatif or with cold meats, cheese and choucroute.

This is one of those beers that falls in the European category of ehhhhh. It’s not bad, but it’s not that good either. Beer Advocate rates this beer around the D+ range and we kinda did too. Please alway try new beers for your self due to that fact that our taste might have been off or the beer was a funky one. Either way this is defiantly a beer, just not one I think we would try again.
