WereWolf (NewCastle) | TheBEERSgoneBAD #26

01 Sep

Named for the mythical wolf-like creature said to roam the English countryside, Werewolf offers hopheads a beer that shares some characteristics of Newcastle Brown, but remains distinctive enough to stand up on its own.

Newcastle Werewolf Ale

Review: If you like to drink a little darker beer, but also like to drink all night, friends this is your beer. Full in flavor without requiring a sophisticated pallet, any one can appreciate the fruity undertones of this light and malty brown ale. A solid job by NewCastle, and what is great about the bigger guys in the brewing scene (Bud, Coors, etc.) you always know what to expect. They bring a certain level of consistency to their beers, seasonal or otherwise. So congrats to NewCastle for putting a new spin on their classic beer.

APPEARANCE: The highly carbonated liquid pours a bright sanguine color with a stark white head that retains its form through the life of the beer. Nice lacing as well. 5 out of 10

AROMA: Strong malt and rye bread fragrance with a hint of berries and slight metal.

PALATE: Sweet malt flavor hits the front of the tongue with subtle berry, grass and wine notes joining in at the midpalate. The liquid momentarily clings to the insides of the mouth before surrendering to a crisp, pleasantly bitter finish.

Price and ABV: around $8.99 a six pack

Shotgun-ability: wouldn’t be to bad, but it might impress your friends, 5.5 out of 10

Time and Place: this is a good going out beer, you can drink em all night and not feel like you just drank a half gallon of whole milk.

Overall Rating: good, half of us would buy it again, 6.5 out of 10

Hey – an excuse to drink beer! I think I’ll start a beer blog. =)
    Nice review guys.

One of you said something about “IB” – are you in the San Diego area?

Just followed on you Twitter (SDBBQ).

I’ll have to go back and see what else you have reviewed (found you via a note to me @geoTC).

How often do you do a review?

Last night I had the Stone Escondidian Black IPA. Talk about some complex tastes!
